RABINAL BAJA VERAPAZ

COMMUNITY

The municipality of Rabinal, located in the department of Baja Verapaz, Guatemala, has a population of 31.168 and covers an area of 504 square kilometers. According to the 2002 census, 81.8% of the population belongs the Achí ethnic group. The economy is based on the cultivation of corn, beans, and peanuts, as well as raising livestock. In the case of women, much of their income comes from washing clothes in their homes, domestic service, and selling produce.

The municipality of Rabinal was very deeply affected by the armed conflict, and here the Maya Achí people were the primary victims. Between the years 1980 and 1983, almost 5,000 people lost their lives in some 20 massacres which occurred in this region alone (CIIDH, 1996). In the years since the signing of the peace accords, they have struggled to gain access to the legal system due to discrimination, lack of resources, and language barriers. The Rabinal Legal Aid Clinic provides legal advice, accompaniment, and handles cases of human rights violations and land rights claims free of charge.
